"We, the undersigned, feeling that home and society demand of the women of today the broadest and fullest culture; and being well assured that our usefulness and enjoyment will be increase by such culture; believing, also, that the interchange of thought and a unity of purpose will stimulate our mental growth, do hereby unite ourselves as a Woman's Club for the sole purpose of study and mental improvement....." ~ 1874

The Lansing Woman's Club was founded by a group of women dedicated to improving their education in an era when women were not admitted to college.  Women would research a variety of topics, write papers, and present them to each other.  Members of the Lansing Women's Club continue to be inquisitive women who research and present papers to to each other, but current members have had more educational opportunities.  Members of the Lansing Woman's Club come from all walks of life and professional backgrounds including academia, civil service, education, private business, and the clergy.  Some members are wives and mothers.  Many are now retirees, though some still work full-time.  Nearly all have spent many hours volunteering their time and enriching their communities through arts and cultural organizations.  Diverse in their interests, personal backgrounds, and professional lives, they share in common a deep belief in the importance of lifelong learning and personal improvement.

Since its founding in 1874, over 650 women have joined the Lansing Woman's Club.  The Club's membership is limited to sixty active members.  Members who have presented at least three papers may apply for retirement status.  Some women have celebrated fifty or even sixty years of membership in the Club.

The Lansing Woman's Club meets weekly from October through April with the exception of holidays and a spring break. Each week, a member presents a paper on the topic of their choosing,  There is a question and answer session followed by afternoon tea.  Members present a paper approximately every three years.
